Flute lessons, all levels, all ages

Description:

Ms. Bogardus has 30 years teaching experience. Currently she is a chamber music coach for adult amatuers at the 92nd ST Y and has a large studio of private students. She has also taught at Childern's Orchestra Society in Manhasset, NY the French American Conservatory, the Universitario Autonoma de Zacatecas (Mexico), and the Conservatoire Nacional (Mexico City), among numerous other music schools both abroad and in the United States. In 2001, as a member of the Dorian Quintet, Ms. Bogardus served on the faculty at the Tanglewood Institute.

Ms. Bogardus holds a BM in flute performance from the New England Conservatory and a MM in flute performance from Northwestern University. Her primary teachers were Keith Underwood, Walfrid Kujala, Ransom Wilson and Mary Karen Clardy.

Performing regularly on Broadway, she has performed hundreds of shows on "Wicked", "Les Miserables" and "Phantom of the Opera" in NY. She spent much of 2006 with the "Phantom of the Opera" National tour. She has recorded for "Wonder Pets" and "Backyardigans", two children's shows on Nickolodeon. Ms. Bogardus also performs with Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra, Westfied Symphony, Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra and Columbia Festival Orchestra. She has held several principal flute positions with major orchestras abroad, including Orquesta Sinfonica de Xalapa, Orquesta Sinfonica de Aguascalientes, Philarmonica de Jalisco and Philarmonica de Queretaro.

Ms. Bogardus' teaching style is based on a strong focus on flute technique (breathing, tonguing, embouchure and vibrato) as well as repertoire, phrasing and ensemble work. Each student's lesson is tailored it their individual needs, and is carefully planned so that specific goals can be met. Topics such as performance anxiety, posture and how to stay focused on the music are also addressed.

Once a year, Ms. Bogardus organizes a recital for her students. This gives them the valuable experience of sharing music with others as well as the opportunity to be part of a community of flutists. She has also organized several master classes with her own mentor Keith Underwood for her students.

Karen has been my flute teacher and chamber music coach for over 4
years. She is musically talented and a great teacher and I have
always felt privileged to be one of her students. Karen is actually a
holistic flute coach. She guides her students through technique (all
the important lessons of fingering, breathing, tonguing etc),
interpretation and basic theory in a way which effectively combines
challenge and encouragement. I always feel that she is 100% present
at my lessons as she targets in on the areas I need to personally
address. I have no hesitation in recommending her as I feel she is
quite exceptional.

Karen is an NY professional flutist of exceptional capabilities, and a
remarkably even better teacher. She offers insight, tips, techniques, and
more importantly pertinent exercises in all areas of flute playing that
deliver immediate results and DEVELOP proper technique in a very short
amount of time. In every area of my development as a flutist, she has been
able to recommend exercises and practice routines that have enabled me to
improve dramatically in a matter of hours...I highly recommend her! Paul Glynn

When I moved to New York City I had few personal connections and even fewer associations to the thriving music scene. My lack of establishment in New York City left me floundering in the search for a truly inspiring and effective individual. The music scene in New York is so expansive that connecting with a teacher is far more difficult than one would think, especially considering I didn’t move to New York to study music exclusively. I searched for months, online and in music schools, for an instructor that would be technically and intellectually challenging without the pretentious egoism exhibited by countless City musicians. Needless to say, if you are on this website, you can probably relate to my tale of woe. (This was before Karen was available online, of course…)
New York may be rough but it is equally serendipitous. Eventually I met an established NYC musician who was able to help me. Karen came highly recommended to me from a professional in the field, and after just one lesson I knew my luck had changed.
I began studying with Karen in the spring of 2005, and as a result, my technical ability, breath control and expression have all drastically improved. Karen is by far among the best teachers I have ever had in music - and in life. She has always exhibited the utmost professionalism, patience and flexibility in our lessons and as an exceptionally active and interactive teacher. Clea Connor
